Courage to Solve Problems concerning Function

Sometimes things just don’t work very well and we just keep living with them the way they currently function. The door that opens the wrong way or the chair that just doesn’t feel comfortable.

Like the function problem of our dining room table, the trestle legs kept the three chairs on each side from pushing in completely. Well, two of them pushed all the way in nicely and the third on each side just bumped awkwardly into the table leg and stuck out further than the others. Truthfully, this had been our kitchen table with different chairs that did push under the table before it landed in the dining room. (My husband purchased a huge slice of a tree and made a live edge table that went in the kitchen.)

The table looked good and was quite sturdy. We purchased it at the RH Outlet and I was very proud to have an RH table. So I lived with the chairs being uneven on each of the long sides of the rectangular table for a good 3 years. But wait there is more, it had a very farm house look and our new dining room was Country French.

Finally one day, with all the courage I could muster, I decided to do something about it. Going to pictures of dining rooms for inspiration to dream of what would fit the style better and have legs that did not hinder pushing the chairs in evenly. Next, to Marketplace to see if a deal on a suitable quality product could be had.

I found a beautiful Country French Antique that just needed a little TLC and a more up to date color. Never one to back down from a challenge we brought it home and I started sanding the old finish off. Stained the top in a weathered gray, added layers of paints to create a beautiful patina to the apron and edge of the top. Beautiful blues that matched in the dining room.

Sounds so easy, right? Nope, change is hard. The thoughts of what am I doing selling a good RH table to drag something old home and put all this work into it?

Every time I’ve had some sort of decision to update or get something more appropriate, it’s been a huge source of self doubt.

Every time I bite the bullet and get the courage to make the change, I wonder what took me so long to do something about it.

So, if you have a room that has furniture that is out of harmony, whether it be color or function or just needs to be updated, get the courage to make a change. Go look for inspiration and then take the steps to make it better. You will be so glad you did.
